The Basics of Art

Dear Artists & Friends,

Drawing Pencil Sketches Newsletter August 2013

Are there basics to be known in the field of art and all its sub-categories, e.g. drawings, paintings, sketching, writing, dancing, acting or even poetry? The list goes on quite a way.

There are basics to be understood and well-known in all these forms of art. Basics must be known cold to perform well in any of the branches of art.

These are the rules and we follow them to create an effect – and we do not follow because teacher said so!

We follow guidelines or rules to raise the bar to create an effect on the viewer be it painting, poetry or any of the other forms.

What is the result you want to achieve with your art? Have you ever thought about it?

With visual art, it might be to create an emotional impact but what about writing, music or even dancing? Same thing really, you want to create a wonderful effect on the viewer or the audience like "I really love that dance sequence. The rhythm and flow are truly exquisite!" Same with poetry don't you think?

There is of course a large gap between not knowing any part of the basics (the amateur or dabbler) and the pro who knows the basics and being conversant with them without even thinking – they are an integral part of him or her. This is when you know you are a winner and people recognize you as a pro.

Where are you on the scale between being an amateur or a pro?

When you know the senior rules and their order of importance with each rule, you’ve arrived at the top. Sometimes this can be a very long way.

I’ll let you in on a little secret, in each of these forms of art, there are only a few to follow especially in drawing and sketching. Honestly, it all depends on if you are drawing as a hobbyist or a pro. Good luck with your drawing.

Have a great month of Drawing and Sketching.

Cheers, Jon
