Abanindranath Tagore

That well-known Indian artist, born August 1871, died 1951, was quite a prolific painter and supporter of Swadeshi styles during his reign in Bengal painting School.

Not only was he a great painter but also a great writer. There were very few notable Indian artists of that era probably because there was too much influence by Western Art.

Tagore wanted to stick with the traditional Indian style although later he used Japanese calligraphy while rejecting Western art. He did eventually become a fan of James Whistler which influenced his painting to a degree.
