Drawing in Ink
by Arnold Bier
Lion Drawing, Pen and Ink
A few thoughts I have here on drawing with pen and ink. Ink drawing is a very direct medium and one that all artists should practice.
There are countless styles that can be drawn using the pen and ink ranging from simple lines to quite complex cross-hatching.
Many famous cartoonists use this medium as outlines and shading to give their cartoons depth.
Drawing with a pen does not seem natural at first but with much practice you will become adept and your style will look natural.
It is a good idea to check out some of the old masters from Rembrandt, Durer, Picasso and others—notice the ease of line, the strength and boldness from one or two swift strokes.
And of course you can vary the thickness of the pen line by pressure or using another quill (hey, draw with a
quill, not a pen.)
