How to Improve on Mother Nature

Well, it is Very Difficult to Improve on Mother Nature! But why not Try?

Drawing nature at any time of the year can sometimes be quite a challenge for me.

Springtime holds excitement when the buds begin to emerge and the birds start to pour out their soul with melodious sounds! Yes, ‘tis a great time of the year for sketching outdoors.

And now, as the temperatures are on the rise, I do not have to wear my thick woolen gloves when holding my pencils.

Drawing nature can be anything from flora and fauna, to animals, to rock formations (I live in the Rockies) so you have a big choice from Mother Nature.

Capture with your pencil the hydrangea’s colorful balloon shape with all the subtle nuances when the sunlight catches one side and bounces reflected light to give exquisite values which you cannot see if you do not focus your attention there. These are the most difficult to capture so use a soft 4B pencil.

Drawing nature’s rock formations can give you marvelous abstract shapes, sharp angular lines when the sun’s brightness on the flattish surfaces show deep—almost black shadows,  giving high contrast to your drawing.  A small plant here and there can give relief to your composition.

Don’t forget in your drawing, the basic "rule of thirds"  for a more powerful composition.

You start off when drawing anything from Mother Nature with a thumbnail sketch about 2 inches by 3 inches and roughly sketch in three basic values—white, black and gray. Notice if you have a balanced (it looks okay to you) composition). This initial planning will save you much time and you will have a great drawing without the use of your eraser.

There are many things you can draw around your house from your old gardening tools, a few scattered empty bottles from last Friday’s binge, a hose pipe coiled up and ready for use or maybe you can see a good drawing in your small tree where the buds are beginning to burst?

Suggestion: For drawing Mother Nature or drawing landscapes, use only HB, 2B and 4B pencils  and a quality sketchpad. As you complete each drawing put a date on it to judge the progress you have made.
