Fantasy Sketches

Easy Guide To Fantasy Drawings

Fantasy sketches are a great way to tap into your imagination and therefore without limitations on you!

When drawing fantasy creatures imagine the world they inhabit. What role do they play in their world? This will help create the characters in your fantasy sketches but first you have to create it in your mind!

Do you have dreams you can sometimes remember? Do you read horror comics and books? You can get plenty of ideas for monstrous or elegant fantasy figures!

Character Construction
When you draw fantasy creatures, image all the various combinations you can form with different species: bugs and humans, birds and humans, birds and reptiles.

Even inanimate objects with living species can make interesting characters. Often this type of creature pops up in futuristic fantasy worlds. However, there are no rules limiting where your fantasy characters should reside. This is the beauty of fantasy drawing.

Knowing a Little Anatomy

Knowledge of different species’ anatomy will help you construct better fantasy creatures. Get some images with animal and human anatomical structures for references.

Collect reference images and keep a file to refer to when you start to draw your fantasy sketches. You’ll find this useful when you draw fantasy creatures. Since your character is imagined it probably won’t be too easy to find one to pose for you.

Sketch out your ideas. Start by drawing a human figure and play with the lines of the figure. Distort and play around with different combinations. Exaggerate features and change body parts. Look at the different features of various species such as scales, fur, eyes, and noses. Try and make them believable when drawing these features even if you exaggerate them.

Imagine that your fantasy warrior or monster might have larger-than-life muscles and loom over all other inhabits creating quite a menacing figure. A gentler creature might look more demure in stature. Combine a human and a monster and see what happens. The object is to brainstorm and let your imagination go wild.

Don’t overdo the exaggeration. If you go too far it might start to resemble a caricature. When drawing a female warrior remember to retain her femininity even while she appears strong and threatening.

Creating a Fantasy World
You can dream up some really fantastical places in your fantasy drawings. Use atmosphere and unlikely places to create an otherworldly feel.

Inspiration
Study the work of other Fantasy Artists like Frazetta, Boris Vallejo, Julie Bell and many others.. Examine what makes their characters believable and authentic. Refer to myths and legends as well as fairy and folk tales. These stories hold a treasure trove of material to stimulate your imagination.

With imagination and practice you will soon be drawing fantasy creatures with confidence and skill.
