Learn How to Use
Your Drawing Pencils

Pencil Drawing Has Been
One of the Earliest Forms of Art

Remember the good old days when you were given a blunt pencil to express your creativity - and an eraser if you were lucky enough to quickly rub out your “mistakes?”

You would have drawn rough sketches about whatever you see or imagine and your parents or teacher praising you for being so creative!

The happiness and eagerness to draw images may well not be present in many people as they grow. For those who are interested in painting, the canvas may shift from pencil to charcoal and from there to watercolors and paint.

If you are truly interested in creating wonderful sketches, then you start from the basics--how to be master of your pencil.

Learn the Basics of Penciling

As you are interested in pencil drawing and passionate about learning how to draw, it is essential you learn the basics of this art form.

Learn the Pencil Artwork techniques by starting to draw simple images from the beginning. There are no rules in drawing so you start with whatever objects or things that pop into to your mind.

Finding a Good Teacher

Even though many say there are no shortcuts in learning how to use pencils, finding a good teacher can help you grasp the basic drawing techniques fast. An expert teacher can provide suggestions about the best ways to hold a pencil to create specific effects and guide you through the drawing process quite easily. Spotting your “mistakes” - although they are not really mistakes - is a great way to correct any errors and polish your skills.

Do Practice Daily

Constant practice will help you create great drawings admired by family and friends.

No one can be an overnight professional artist in any art form.

Pencil Artwork is one thing that will need more care and skill. Unlike paints and other media, you have nothing but the stark white surface of your paper to highlight your drawing.

Faced with a blank piece of paper can be quite daunting and may leave you a little scared of messing up your sheet. Don’t worry, paper is fairly inexpensive. In my career as an artist I have thrown 100’s of rough sketches into the trash can!

If your drawing looks good, save it, date it to judge your progress, then archive it!

You have to make the viewer interested in your drawing and so learn how to guide your viewer into your picture to what is called “focal points” and where to place them for maximum effect.  This will only come after you have gained a little experience.

Diligent and thorough practice can make you obtain the level of expertise you desire. Therefore, one thing you should do while learning pencil sketches is to practice drawing regularly a variety of things you see around you.

Don’t copy photographs because they are only two dimensions whereas with three-dimensional objects you will have to consider perspective – and that is yet another skill you have to learn.
