Some Fundamentals of Sketching
by Sarah Luditz
The basic fundamentals of art—in this case drawings, can be summed up as the "quality of communication" or, in other words, does it say something to its intended audience or intended viewer?
Even abstract art (non representational stuff) should emit some emotional feeling or be aligned in the viewers eye as something it COULD represent.
A definition of abstract art is "forms created by the artist created from things he has seen or experienced—or of non representational objects." The observer here puts his own interpretation perhaps from dreams or things seen and this creates an emotional response and therefore an effect.
This is what the experienced artist strives for—cause an effect. It is useless sitting in an ivory tower painting for you only, it has to be seen by an audience and should have something to SAY to the viewer.
