Mel Ramos after Manet's "Olympia"

Some notable artists in bygone years did share many themes and ripped off (copied exactly) other artists and the rip-offs did not give new meaning or show any originality.

You probably know that the painting by Manet "Olympia" has been ripped off many times and only Matisse and Picasso gave their own interpretation which was quite creative.

Mel Ramos was one artist who gave a completely different slant on the original painting by Manet. The painting, created in 1973, looks more like something you'd see in Playboy Magazine.

Although not really part of the copycat "themes" - the Matisse 'Nude in the studio' was masterfully created with its spacial properties using only line.

The artists studio is a very personal and intimate part of an artists life and does to some extent become part of a shared theme with visiting artists.

There have been many shared themes in "mother and child" goes beyond art as it embraces and touches more on spirituality.

No Sensitivity
by: Selma Marshall

I only give it three stars because it does not have the sensitivity of Picasso's work. Sure, it is competently done and you would not know the difference if you had not seen the original.

Picasso was one of the truly great artists of our time and any copy of his works cannot come anywhere close.
